CREATION OF A HEALTH SERVICE DIRECTORY

WHEREAS, the continual growth of the Hispanic community of Northern Ohio requires culturally competent health services; and
WHEREAS, the Hispanic Community of Northern Ohio must have access to current and appropriate health service information.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Health Area Team will create a directory of services aimed at promoting culturally competent health services specific to the Latino community in Northern Ohio in an effort to assist health organizations and/or institutions recruit qualified, bilingual culturally competent health care professionals.

INFORM EDUCATION AND HEALTH INSTITUTIONS ON HOW TO
REDUCE MENTAL HEALTH DISPARITIES IN THE HISPANIC COMMUNITY

WHEREAS, the need for addressing mental health deficiencies in the Hispanic community has reached a critical point; and
WHEREAS, the resources to serve the Hispanic community concerning mental health are not accessible.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Health Area Team will conduct workshops aimed at informing education and health institutions on how they can reduce the mental health disparities
of the Hispanic community.

TO AGGRESSIVELY ADDRESS THE HIGH INCIDENCE RATE OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES AND DIABETES AFFECTING OUR LATINO COMMUNITIES BY INCREASING HEALTH EDUCATION ON PREVENTIVE MEASURES, EARLY DETECTION SCREENINGS, AND INCREASE FUNDING RESOURCES TO ENSURE IMPACT ON OUR LATINO COMMUNITIES

WHEREAS, Hispanics are the largest minority group in the United States, and the fastest growing ethnic group in Northern Ohio; and
WHEREAS, the 2005 Statewide Latino Health Survey Findings and Analysis Report published by the Ohio Latino Health Coalition, reported that 22.7% of Latino respondents and 51.3% of family members had hypertension and 16.9% of respondents and 47.4% of family members reported diabetes as the second most common condition; and
WHEREAS, there is a critical need to develop funding for preventive health education on cardiovascular diseases and diabetes in an effort to reduce the high incidence rate of these diseases in the Latino population.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Health Area Team in partnership with the Northern Ohio region and the Ohio Latino Health Coalition will work together to seek funding resources, promote existent health programs in communities, and develop culturally competent bilingual health education programs to reduce the incidence rate of cardiovascular and diabetes among
our Latino communities in Northern Ohio.

REDUCE THE BARRIERS IN ACCESSING HEALTH CARE SERVICES FOR THE LATINO COMMUNITIES IN NORTHERN OHIO BY PARTNERING WITH OHIO LATINO HEALTH COALITION IN DEVELOPING A COMPREHENSIVE PLAN THAT WILL ADDRESS ISSUES INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO: LACK OF BILINGUAL SERVICES, IMMIGRATION STATUS, LACK OF INSURANCE AND CULTURAL COMPETENCY

WHEREAS, the 2005 Statewide Latino Health Survey Findings and Analysis Report, published by the Ohio Latino Health Coalition, indicated that over 57.7% of Latinos self-reported need for bilingual services, and 53.4% reported a need for increased cultural competency among health services providers.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Health Area Team, in partnership with the Northern Region and the Ohio Latino Health Coalition, will work with health care providers (hospitals, clinics, private physicians, etc.) in reducing the barriers affecting access to health care services for the Latino population.

COORDINATING TITLE VI WORKSHOP

WHEREAS, health institutions and health care service providers need to understand the culture of the Latino community and the barriers that they face, such as language, when accessing health care, and
WHEREAS, health institutions and health care providers need to understand and implement the Title VI regulations, to better serve their consumers especially those that are not English proficient.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Health Area Team will take a leadership role in cosponsoring a Title VI workshop, in collaboration with Ohio Latino Health Coalition, aimed at health institutions and providers.
